Cadillac . Brake Rotor Replacement InstructionsBrake rotors are part of a disc braking system. The rotor, or disc, spins freely with the vehicle's wheel. Disc brake pads are mounted into a hydraulically operated caliper that straddles the rotor. When the brake pedal is pushed, pressure is applied to the caliper, which squeezes the brake pads against the rotor. This creates friction and slows or stops the vehicle. Even though brake pads are considered a wear item and need periodic replacement, the metal rotors will eventually wear and will need to be replaced also, albeit less frequently than the pads. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Floor jack Lug wrench Wheel chock Flat blade screwdriver Socket set Ratchet wrench Bungee cord Phillips screwdriver Pliers (optional) Large adjustable wrench (optional) Rubber mallet (optional) Step by Step : 1 Place a floor jack under the frame rail closest to the wheel of the brake rotor you wish to replace. Loosen the wheel lugs of this wheel with a lug wrench. Chock the wheel diagonally opposite the wheel to be removed. Use the floor jack to lift the wheel two or three inches off the ground. Place a jack stand under the lower suspension control arm and lower the floor jack. Remove the wheel lugs, then remove the wheel to reveal the disc brake parts. 2 Pry the protective rubber plugs (if equipped) from the caliper retaining bolts with a flat blade screwdriver and place them aside. Loosen and remove the caliper retaining bolts with a socket and ratchet. Pull the bolts straight out of the caliper and place them aside. Grasp the caliper and lift it straight up and off of the disc brake rotor. Hang the caliper to the inner wheel well liner with a bungee cord so that the still-attached brake hose will not be damaged. 3 Remove the retaining screws on the outer side of the rotor (if equipped) with a Phillips screwdriver, otherwise just pull the rotor straight out from the wheel hub and remove it from the vehicle. 4 Push a new rotor onto the wheel hub until it is fully seated. Replace any retaining screws, if applicable. Unhook the bungee cord from the caliper and push it back down over the rotor. 5 Replace the caliper retaining bolts and tighten them with a socket and ratchet. Push the rubber plugs back into place, if applicable. Replace the wheel and tighten the lug nuts. Raise the vehicle with the floor jack and slide the jack stand out from under the vehicle. Lower the floor jack and remove it. Finish tightening the lugs nuts in a crisscross pattern. Tips & Warnings Some rear wheel drive vehicles may have a front disc brake rotor that is actually built into the wheel hub. To remove this type of rotor, first pry the dust cap off of the center of the rotor with a flat blade screwdriver and place it aside. Remove the cotter pin from the now-revealed retaining nut with a pair of pliers. Loosen and remove the center hub nut with a large adjustable wrench. Lay a clean rag at the base of the rotor. Grasp the rotor and pull it straight off of the spindle, letting the outer wheel bearing fall onto the clean rag. Turn the rotor over and pry out the grease seal with a flat blade screwdriver. Lift the inner wheel bearing straight up and place it in the same orientation into a replacement rotor. Drive a new grease seal onto the new rotor with a rubber mallet. Replace the rotor in the reverse order.
Cadillac . How to Remove Brake Calipers from a C6 Z06The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is a high-performance version of the Corvette sports car. The Corvette Z06 uses 6-caliper piston disc brakes on the front wheels and 4-caliper piston disc brakes on the rear wheels. Removing the brake calipers isn't necessary to replace the brake pads, but it may be necessary to bleed the brake lines of air bubbles. Removing the brake calipers is a straightforward process, but you should only do it if absolutely necessary because the brake lines have to be bled of air bubbles once a new caliper is installed. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Tire iron Floor jack Jack stands 15-mm ratchet and socket set Small pail 10-mm open-end wrench Step by Step : 1 Park the Corvette on a hard, level surface. 2 Use the tire iron to loosen the lug nuts on the tire covering the brake caliper you want to remove. 3 Slide the floor jack under the Corvette and lift the car by a lift point on the frame. Check your owner's manual for pictures of the lift point locations. 4 Place a jack stand under an adjacent lift point on the frame and lower the Corvette onto the jack stand. 5 Use the tire iron to fully remove the lug nuts and the tire covering the brake caliper. 6 Remove the bolts on the back of the brake caliper using the ratchet and 15-mm socket. 7 Pull the brake caliper off the brake assembly housing. 8 Tilt the brake caliper up so that the brake line enters the bottom of the brake caliper. 9 Set the pail below the brake line to catch excess brake fluid. Step by Step : 10 Unscrew the nut where the brake line attaches to the brake caliper, using the 10-mm wrench. Remove the brake caliper. *trucks of the future. One reason is that diesel is more efficient than gasoline. A diesel engine in good tune usually uses about 24 percent of the energy in the fuel for propulsion power. Gasoline engines most often run at around 20 percent when in good shape. So diesel, if it's cleaned up, has many good points. In fact, the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV), a nationwide effort by the major domestic carmakers and the federal government to produce the New Millennium's optimum vehicle, has fixed on these small diesel engines coupled with electric motors as the best hope for achieving its goal of producing a hybrid five-passenger car that can get 70 to 80 miles per gallon with extremely low emissions. Alternative porter plants Alternative fuels lead to a whole new arena of alternative power plants: the innovations that will likely reduce the dependence on the standard internal combustion engine (ICE). Hybrids Actually, the first kind of alternative power system uses a small ICE as a critical component. The system is called a hybrid power plant because it's a mix — 378

It combines small internal combustion engines and elec tric motors to get maximum power with minimum emissions and maximum fuel economy. There are two kinds of hybrids (see Figure 7-12 for an illustration): " A series hybrid uses a gasoline or diesel engine, coupled with an alternator, to generate the electricity that the electric motor needs to do its work. The electric motor, though, is what actually propels the vehicle, using its power to rotate a driveshaft or a set of drive axles that turn the wheels. Figure 7-12: A hybrid engine. . Chapter 7: Diesels and Alternatively Powered Vehicles 153 A parallel hybrid uses both motors for propulsion. They can run in tandem, or one can be used as the primary power source with the other kicking in to assist when extra power is needed for starting off, climbing hills, and accelerating to pass other vehicles. The ICE in a parallel hybrid also generates enough electricity to charge a small set of storage batteries mounted in the vehicle's engine compartment or somewhere on the frame. The batteries then provide power for the electric motor when it's called on to do its job. Cadillac . How much is a vehicle inspection sticker in mississippi?
Dodge Ram 2500 Crew Cab. * Energy management Fuel tank & system controls Energy storage unit Thermal management system Hybrid power unit Traction motor An electronic motor controller sends out the marching orders to the two motors, basing its judgment calls on information received from sensors that tell it things like how hard the driver is pressing on the accelerator or how much strain the internal combustion engine is under. Having the ICE generator on-board eliminates the need for the costly recharging systems in use on the current crop of battery-driven electric vehicles. If equipped with the same-size gas tanks as conventional ICE-powered vehicles, hybrids have much greater range because of their significantly improved gas mileage. Honda and Toyota have developed the first commercial hybrid cars. Both are scheduled to go on sale in the United States as year 2000 models. Honda's hybrid — code named the W — uses a 3-cylinder, 1-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor whose size hadn't been disclosed at press time. The gas engine provides the main power, with the electric kicking in as a sort of supercharger when more power is needed. Cadillac . What happens when you drop a bag out of a car?

It works like the Honda, with the electric motor pro viding extra power when needed. Toyota claims that this car will go 800 miles on a 13.2-gallon tank of gas. The Prius went on sale in Japan in 1998 as the world's first commercially available gas-electric hybrid. Both cars have ultra- clean emissions. And, best of all, both will be priced at under $20,000! It should also fit as well in the average family's budget as it does in the garage. The section called "Operating an electric vehicle" at the end of this chapter tells you what driving an electric vehicle is like. Actually, the battery electrics now on the road have several of those characteristics. They do accelerate well, although the extremely heavy battery packs keep them from qualifying as anyone's idea of a hot rod. (However, a private carmaker in southern California does build a two-seat electric sports car that goes from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, which is up there in Chevy Corvette and Dodge Viper territory.) And most of today's electrics will cruise on the freeways at speeds of 75 to 85 mph, depending on how heavy and aerodynamic the vehicle is and how the factory has regulated, or governed, the motor to limit top speed. Nissan's Altra EV, for example, has its top speed limited at 75 mph. Electric cars and trucks also can haul big loads and climb steep hills with rel ative ease. That's because, unlike an internal combustion engine that needs to build up revolutions before the maximum pulling power, or torque, kicks in, an electric motor provides almost all of its torque from the start. Unfortu nately, fast acceleration, hill climbing, and cruising at speeds above 50 miles per hour all consume extra electricity, which cuts down on an electric vehi Cadillac .
